The JW Marriott is known the world over for their resorts. What is not always known is that the Scottsdale Camelback Inn was Marriott’s first resort. It has a long history. In 1936, Jack Stewart convinced some investors, headed by his friend John C. Lincoln, to build a $75,000 hotel near the bottom of Camelback Mountain. It began attracting wealthy visitors who would come to explore the then remote area of the southwest. The Camelback Inn became Scottsdale’s very first resort. After the Marriott family bought the property, celebrities visited. Names like Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Clark Gable, and Bette Davis among others. In 1967, Marriott made it official as their first resort. It won it’s first Five-Star rating from Mobil Travel Guide two years later in 1969, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Today, celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Bobby Flay, and Tom Selleck continue to frequent the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort & Spa. When the resort turned 70, it celebrated with a $45 million renovation. The resort is continually striving to make sure they stay up to date with both wired and wireless internet access across the property, fine dining, two 18 hole golf courses, and a delightful spa. The 125 acre property showcases beautiful views of both Camelback and Mummy Mountain making the outdoors just as breathtaking as the indoors.

When you’re ready to host that meeting or get married, there is ample space for you to choose from whether it be a grand affair, or a more intimate gathering. There are 20 meeting rooms totaling 40,000 square feet of meeting space. The Marriott is able to cater to your every need at meetings from offering a varied menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or in betweens, to hooking up audio/visual materials, to helping you with planning tools to make your event truly special. Get togethers can be as private as you need, and you’re free to book a private room at one of the restaurants on property if you’d rather have a meal there.

BLT Steak is the most stand out restaurant on property. This venue is a chic, modern American Steakhouse with French bistro notes. Dress up when you want a table here to taste Chef Laurent Tourondel’s creations. For a less formal option, choose Rita’s Kitchen. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Rita’s d├ęcor and food is distinctly Southwestern in the way that you can only find here in Arizona. Chef Geno Alvarez, originally from Mexico, makes authentic dishes that will make your mouth water, and satisfy your craving for comfort food. When you’re ready for drinks with friends, visit the R Bar for small plates and handcrafted cocktails, or Starbucks for a caffeine fix. When you’re out enjoying the pool, Hoppin’ Jacks at the Jackrabbit pool will serve up lunch from hand tossed pizza to burgers and ice cream. If you prefer something light and healthy, Sprouts at the Spa is sure to have what you’re looking for. Perfect for a light lunch for your spa day.

One last restaurant is The Golf Grill at Camelback Golf Club. Step into the clubhouse, and you’ll find a full line of PGA approved clothing, and the Golf Grill. Set with a view of a small lake, the Grill is casual yet elegant. Whether or not you’re there to golf, enjoy the televisions, patio and bar for breakfast, lunch, and happy hour. When you are there to play, Camelback Golf Club, managed by Marriott Golf is a short three miles from the resort. Shuttles are provided for your convenience. There are two courses offering parkland style golf. The first is the 18 hole Padre Course which is lined by trees and notable bunkering. The other course is the newly renovated Ambiente course with an eco-friendly focus. If you don’t want to lug your equipment, there are rentals and lessons available, and you can make it a family event as kids golf for free.

The Spa at Camelback Inn is where you can go to let all your troubles melt away. Relax with a body scrub, facial, massage, or other treatment. Work up a sweat in the fitness room, or take a power walk on one of the trails on the map. A full service salon is also available so you can look your best while feeling your best. If you prefer, there’s a plunge pool perfect for swimming laps, a sauna, steam room, and solarium. Open to all guests 16 years of age and above. If you wish to rent a poolside cabana, you will enjoy amenities such as chilled water, fruit, and face towels, along with lounge chairs and a ceiling fan. There’s also a skin care store and boutique to shop at.

At last, settle into your guestroom. Seven of the casitas offer their own private swimming pool. All of the rooms offer down comforters, designer duvets and plush pillows. A microwave and mini fridge is included as well as high speed internet. When you come to the Marriott, you can be prepared to be treated like royalty. No other luxury resort offers exactly what the Marriott does, and because they are world wide, you can earn points toward stays at the Scottsdale location, or any other Marriott. To say you’ll be pleased with your stay is an understatement.
