On the corner of the Scottsdale Quarter, there’s a place you can go to get a taste of the Baja. SOL Mexican Cocina offers south of the border tastes with a coastal Californian flare. The creators of SOL took many wonderful trips down to the Baja to surf and eat the traditional food. They fell in love with it and opened SOL in Newport Beach, California. It was so good, they decided to open another location in a more landlocked portion of the Baja area, Scottsdale, Arizona. With them, they brought the simple, fresh, quick style of cooking the Baja chefs are known for with the memories of the relaxing ocean side atmosphere.

From the moment you step into SOL, you immediately realize this is not just another run of the mill Mexican restaurant. One wall of the dining area is dedicated to the kitchen. There’s a kitchen bar you can sit at to watch the chefs in action. This is very typical of the open concept taco bars down in the Baja Peninsula. At SOL, you have the option to rent out their private room, the entire restaurant, or just the patio for a party or corporate event. The lighting inside casts a warm yellow glow while on the other side of the cozy space, there is a drink kitchen.

The drink kitchen is so named because all of the drinks are made with fresh muddled fruit, different herbs, and spices. Just ask the drink chef for the featured cocktail and have a seat inside, or out on the patio while you soak in the sun. SOL’s drink menu is both refined, fun, and expansive. There are over 70 kinds of premium and artisan tequilas to choose from which can be served straight, or in one of SOL’s tantalizing margaritas. Try a sweet and spicy Pineapple Serrano Margarita, or count calories with the Organic Slim. Forget Lattes- there’s a Pumpkin Spice Margarita to liven up your Autumn, and there’s even tequila tastings for the adventurous. Don’t despair if tequila is not your thing. Many imported and domestic cervezas are also on the menu to cool you down. Come in for Happy Hour happening seven days a week from 3 – 6 p.m. to try them along with some tasty small plates.

For lunch, dinner, or brunch on the weekends, SOL’s menu is a mix of fresh and decadent. Lunch offerings include everything from salad and ceviche to specialty tacos, tortas, grilled burritos, and quesadillas. Dinner offers traditional and exotic dishes like Grilled Quail, Garlic Ribeye Steak Tacos, Shrimp Chile Relleno, and Carnitas Street Tacos. If you have dietary restrictions, SOL offers both Vegan and Vegetarian items. Brunch is served from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on the weekends, and boasts the “best huevos in town.” From the Chorizo and Potato Scramble to the rich Souffle Carlotta, or the simple fresh fruit and yogurt, there’s bound to be a dish to please you. Weekend drinks even include Mango Mimosas, and SOL’s house made Bloody Mary among others. The best time though, has got to be Taco and Tequila Tuesday! Every Tuesday enjoy live music, drinks and taco specials.

All the food at SOL is made from scratch, and you can watch it being made in front of you. Stop by SOL in the Scottsdale Quarter, and you won’t be sorry. It’s delicious cuisine, inviting dining area, and fun atmosphere make this a can’t miss experience. Take a trip to the coastal Baja desert without even leaving your neighborhood.
